Nizwa & Jebel Akhdar
The old capital, the green mountain, and terraces of rose and pomegranate.

Nizwa, still a market town The circular fort is the postcard; the reason to stay is the souq and the date press and the fact that the interior still orbits this town. Friday morning livestock is loud and specific. We sleep in a restored inn inside the old fabric, not on the bypass.
Up the green mountain Jebel Akhdar is a limestone plateau at two thousand metres. Terraces hold roses, walnuts, pomegranates. In spring the distilleries work at night. Walks are village to village, not summit bagging. Evenings are cold enough for a fire.
